11 Remarkable items every Valparaiso University Student should own

Every single year before you go off to VU, you either physically or mentally create a checklist of everything you plan on taking with you at the start of the school year. There are 11 remarkable items every Valparaiso University student should own.

Confessions of a VU Senior

I’ll say this, the list you currently have engraved in your brain is slightly too short. There are several items you can add this year which are either necessities, or minor luxuries that will enhance your living situation.

In this blog, I will share with you 11 remarkable items that you won’t want to skip out on bringing to your living space this year.

11.) Sunglasses

Who would have guessed? The sun shines often in Chicago land, and there isn’t a whole lot of shade on Valparaiso University’s campus. Instead of staring at the ground when you’re facing the sun, try looking straight ahead when you remember to bring your sunglasses this year.

10.) Chapstick

For the other end of the spectrum at Valparaiso University. It should be known that Northwest Indiana gets extremely cold during the winter. While your clothes might help you battle against the frigid wind and temperature, your face probably won’t be so lucky. Be smart and apply chapstick to keep your lips from cracking and getting dry. You’ll be thankful you made this $2 purchase when you look around at your peers.

9.) Air Freshener

Whether you’re a freshman Valparaiso University student in a dorm, or a senior Valparaiso University student living off-campus, you should know that without constant cleaning and circulating air, your room might not be in the best condition. If you bring air freshener, you can keep your place smelling fresh every day.

8.) Hand Sanitizer/Wipes

Short and to the point, these items will keep you and your items void of germs, and they might even make you get sick a couple times less throughout your school year at Valparaiso University. If you like a fresh room, wipes are also great for dusting.

7.) Tide To Go

Chances are, throughout your year at Valparaiso University, you’ll likely land some sort of substance on that favorite shirt of yours. Before you freak out and say it’s ruined, be prepared and carry a stain remover such as Tide To Go. Even if you are fortunate and don’t stain any clothes, your roommate might be forever thankful when you lend your Tide pen to them.

6.) Tableware

With Valparaiso University’s brand new meal plan, you’ll probably be able to eat in the dining halls more this year than in the past. However, sometimes you’re sick, you just want to stay in, or it’s past the hours the dining areas are open. On those occasions, you need to realize that you need either a plate or a bowl, and of course some silverware for whatever you prepare.

5.) Baking Soda

This substance can do just about everything. Need to clean something? Baking soda. Fresher Laundry? Baking soda. Trouble with a stain? Baking soda. Cleaner mouth? Baking soda. Whiter teeth? Baking soda. Eliminate an odor? Baking soda. Stomach hurts or heartburn? Baking soda.

4.) Speaker

Here’s a luxury that you need to bring while being a student at Valparaiso University. There’s no better way to enjoy your music and create fun social settings than when you have a speaker in your room. It’s also a wonderful way to make friends with your RA.

3.) Formal Attire

I strongly encourage you to bring formal attire when you head to Valparaiso University this year. When you get involved on campus, there are so many expected and unexpected occasions when you’re called to dress up. Often times it’s mandatory, and even if you’re not involved with much, if you happen to be a business student at Urschel Hall, you will need to have formal clothes at your ready.

VU students should always have formal attire in their room for when special occasions occur

2.) Clothes Steamer

This coincidentally comes right after formal attire. Many of you might not know what a clothes steamer is, but it’s something I recommend you all bring.

Essentially the small machine gets filled with water, much like an iron, only instead of pressing your clothes, you pull a trigger, and scorching steam comes out and magically eliminates wrinkles in your clothing. It doesn’t require much learning to use, and it can be used on all of your outfits so you look extra clean-cut.

1.) Water Filter

Purchasing water bottles is hardly different than purchasing bottled air, and it’s very expensive if it becomes something you regularly consume. While water fountains are available wherever you are at Valparaiso University, it’s very convenient to get fresh and filtered water right out of your room’s facet.

Having filtered water available in your room will certainly encourage a healthier lifestyle too, as its presence alone will cause it to be your number 1 consumed beverage.

Universal Application

Now that your list of items to bring to VU has grown a little bit, you’re going to be living a higher quality life. What’s especially great about these 11 remarkable items, is they have use no matter where you’re staying at.

I’m at Uptown East this year, and while I have every necessary and luxurious amenity you can imagine, such as the place coming furnished, having my own kitchen, and an in-unit washer/dryer, I’ll still have a use for every item on this list.
